• The five daughters of the Lisbon family, in Jeffrey Eugenides's novel, The Virgin Suicides. First, 13-year-old Cecilia tries and fails to kill herself by slitting her wrists. A few weeks later, she jumps from a second story window window and dies, impaled on a fence-post. A year later, the remaining girls commit mass suicide in a variety of methods. Lux (15) dies of carbon monoxide poisoning; Bonnie (16) hangs herself; and Therese (18) overdoses on sleeping pills. Mary (17) attempts to kill herself by sticking her head in the oven, but lives for another month before ending her life with an overdose of sleeping pills.
