List of Submissions To The 49th Academy Awards For Best Foreign Language Film

The following 23 films, all from different countries, were submitted for the 49th Academy Awards in the category Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film which took place in 1977. The highlighted titles were the five nominated films, which came from Côte d'Ivoire, East Germany, France, Italy and Poland. The Côte d'Ivoire became the first sub-Saharan African country to submit a film to the competition, and it ended up winning the Oscar for the dark comedy Black and White in Color. It is likely the film would not have even been accepted under today's rules, since the director was French and the film was a majority French production. The Ivorians have not submitted a single film for the Foreign Language Oscar since.

Japan failed to submit a film, for the first and only time. East Germany received its only nomination ever for Jacob the Liar.

Famous quotes containing the words list of, list, academy, foreign, language and/or film:

Do your children view themselves as successes or failures? Are they being encouraged to be inquisitive or passive? Are they afraid to challenge authority and to question assumptions? Do they feel comfortable adapting to change? Are they easily discouraged if they cannot arrive at a solution to a problem? The answers to those questions will give you a better appraisal of their education than any list of courses, grades, or test scores.
    Lawrence Kutner (20th century)

Hey, you dress up our town very nicely. You don’t look out the Chamber of Commerce is going to list you in their publicity with the local attractions.
Robert M. Fresco, and Jack Arnold. Dr. Matt Hastings (John Agar)

When the State wishes to endow an academy or university, it grants it a tract of forest land: one saw represents an academy, a gang, a university.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

There is a close tie of affection between sovereigns and their subjects; and as chaste wives should have no eyes but for their husbands, so faithful liegemen should keep their regards at home and not look after foreign crowns. For my part I like not for my sheep to wear a stranger’s mark nor to dance after a foreigner’s whistle.
    Elizabeth I (1533–1603)

Nothing so fretful, so despicable as a Scribbler, see what I am, & what a parcel of Scoundrels I have brought about my ears, & what language I have been obliged to treat them with to deal with them in their own way;Mall this comes of Authorship.
    George Gordon Noel Byron (1788–1824)

    I’ll be right here.
