Geo. Tyler Coulson and His Dog, Mabel

In March 2011, 32-year-old Chicago attorney Geo. Tyler Coulson left his corporate law job at the law firm Sidley Austin in Chicago to walk across the United States with his dog, Mabel. Coulson and Mabel left Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, on March 11, 2011, and finished in San Diego, California, on November 8, 2011. Although Coulson began his hike on the American Discovery Trail, weather and time constraints forced him to adopt a shorter route. Along the way, Coulson and Mabel encountered numerous thunderstorms, tornados, and a record heat wave across Illinois, Iowa, and Nebraska. Coulson had temporary car support in western Nebraska, and again from Koosharem, Utah, to Temecula, California. Coulson's hike is the subject of the book By Men or By the Earth.
