List of National Universities in Japan

As of 2008, there were 87 national universities (国立大学, kokuritsu daigaku?), 89 public universities and 580 private universities in Japan. National universities tend to be held in higher regard in higher education in Japan than private or public universities.

In 2004, the national university system underwent partial privatization. Since 2004, every national university has been incorporated as a "national university corporation" (国立大学法人, kokuritsu daigaku hōjin?) and given considerable autonomy in its operations. Faculty and staff are no longer government employees (国家公務員, kokka kōmuin?) working for the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology.

Famous quotes containing the words list of, list, national, universities and/or japan:

    Shea—they call him Scholar Jack—
Went down the list of the dead.
    Officers, seamen, gunners, marines,
The crews of the gig and yawl,
The bearded man and the lad in his teens,
    Carpenters, coal-passers—all.
    Joseph I. C. Clarke (1846–1925)

    Lastly, his tomb
Shall list and founder in the troughs of grass
And none shall speak his name.
    Karl Shapiro (b. 1913)

    Just so before we’re international,
We’re national and act as nationals.
    Robert Frost (1874–1963)

In universities and intellectual circles, academics can guarantee themselves popularity—or, which is just as satisfying, unpopularity—by being opinionated rather than by being learned.
    —A.N. (Andrew Norman)

I do not know that the United States can save civilization but at least by our example we can make people think and give them the opportunity of saving themselves. The trouble is that the people of Germany, Italy and Japan are not given the privilege of thinking.
    Franklin D. Roosevelt (1882–1945)
