Magical Ball With Distractor Spell
To demonstrate the power of a distractor spell, Coulter shows Kendra and Seth a silvery ball, about the size of a baseball. With the distractor spell it is very hard, and nearly impossible, to grab because it always redirects your focus to something else when you concentrate on it. The only people in the book that can retrieve the ball are Kendra and Coulter; Kendra, because ever since becoming fairykind, she is immune to mind control spells, and Coulter because he has practiced concentrating on something next to the ball but keep the ball in the back of his mind. Once he is focusing on something near the ball, and he glimpses the ball, he snatches it before becoming distracted. Distractor spells are used in the books primarily as border protections to magical preserves. Kendra's immunity to distractor spells became necessary in her future adventurings.

Famous quotes containing the words magical, ball and/or spell:
“The child who would be an adult must give up any lingering childlike sense of parental power, either the magical ability to solve your problems for you or the dreaded ability to make you turn back into a child. When you are no longer hiding from your parents, or clinging to them, and can accept them as fellow human beings, then they may do the same for you.”
—Frank Pittman (20th century)
“Life ... is not simply a series of exciting new ventures. The future is not always a whole new ball game. There tends to be unfinished business. One trails all sorts of things around with one, things that simply wont be got rid of.”
—Anita Brookner (b. 1928)
“We drove the Indians out of the land,
But a dire revenge those Redmen planned,
For they fastened a name to every nook,
And every boy with a spelling book
Will have to toil till his hair turns gray
Before he can spell them the proper way.”
—Eva March Tappan (18541930)
