There are 19 natural satellites in the Solar System that are known to be massive enough to have achieved hydrostatic equilibrium, what Alan Stern calls satellite planets. Another satellite, the Neptunian moon Proteus, is not in hydrostatic equilibrium, but is slightly larger than Mimas, the smallest of the 19 satellite planemos. Satellites are listed first in order from the Sun, and second in order from their parent body.

Famous quotes containing the word satellite:
“Books are the best things, well used; abused, among the worst. What is the right use? What is the one end, which all means go to effect? They are for nothing but to inspire. I had better never see a book, than to be warped by its attraction clean out of my own orbit, and made a satellite instead of a system.”
—Ralph Waldo Emerson (18031882)
