Liao Dynasty

  • Yelü Hongji (Chinese: 耶律洪基; Mandarin Pinyin: Yēlǜ Hóngjī; Jyutping: Je4-leot6 Hung4-gei1) is the ambitious ruler of Liao. He once led a raid on the Jurchens but was defeated and captured by Xiao Feng. Xiao spares his life and becomes sworn brothers with him. Xiao Feng helps him suppress a rebellion later and he rewards Xiao by making the latter a noble. Near the end of the novel, he orders Xiao Feng to lead his army to attack the Song Dynasty but Xiao refuses so he has Xiao imprisoned. In the last chapter he is taken hostage by Xiao Feng, who forces him to make an oath that he will not allow any Liao soldier to cross the border and attack Song for as long as he lives.
  • Yelü Nielugu (traditional Chinese: 耶律涅魯古; simplified Chinese: 耶律涅鲁古; Mandarin Pinyin: Yēlǜ Nièlúgǔ; Jyutping: Je4-leot6 Nip6-lou5-gu2) is Yelü Chongyuan's son and the "Great Prince of the South Palace" (南院大王) of Liao. He rebels against Yelü Hongji to help his father seize the throne but is defeated and slain by Xiao Feng. Yelü Hongji then gives Nielugu's palace and title to Xiao Feng.
  • Yelü Chongyuan (Chinese: 耶律重元; Mandarin Pinyin: Yēlǜ Chóngyuán; Jyutping: Je4-leot6 Cung4-jyun4) is an uncle of Yelü Hongji and a field commander of the Liao army. He is instigated by his son Yelü Nielugu to rebel against Yelü Hongji but the revolt is suppressed and he commits suicide.
  • Noble Consort Mu (traditional Chinese: 穆貴妃; simplified Chinese: 穆贵妃; Mandarin Pinyin: Mù Guìfēi; Jyutping: Muk6 Gwai3-fei1) is Yelü Hongji's favourite concubine. She tricks A'zi into giving Xiao Feng a "love potion", which is actually a drug that will cause Xiao Feng to become temporarily weakened.
