Kingdom of Dali

  • Duan Zhengming (Chinese: 段正明; Mandarin Pinyin: Duàn Zhèngmíng; Jyutping: Dyun6 Zeng3-ming4) is the benevolent and wise monarch of Dali who is highly respected by his subjects and people. He abdicates to become a monk to help the elders of Heavenly Dragon Monastery deal with Jiumozhi.
  • Duan Zhengchun (Chinese: 段正淳; Mandarin Pinyin: Duàn Zhèngchún; Jyutping: Dyun6 Zeng3-seon4) is the Zhennan Prince of Dali and Duan Zhengming's younger brother. Notorious for his philandering ways, he conceives several illegitimate daughters with many different women in his younger days. Ironically, his daughters become lovers with Duan Yu, who is believed to be his son. He succeeds his brother as king of Dali and has been confronted numerous times by Duan Yanqing, who attempts to force him to hand over his throne.
  • Gao Shengtai (Chinese: 高升泰; Mandarin Pinyin: Gāo Shēngtài; Jyutping: Go1 Sing1-taai3) is the Marquis of Shanchan. He rules Dali after Duan Zhengchun's death before eventually passing the throne to Duan Yu.
  • Fan Hua (traditional Chinese: 范驊; simplified Chinese: 范骅; Mandarin Pinyin: Fàn Huá; Jyutping: Faan6 Waa4), Ba Tianshi (Chinese: 巴天石; Mandarin Pinyin: Bā Tiānshí; Jyutping: Baa1 Tin1-sek6) and Hua Hegen (traditional Chinese: 華赫艮; simplified Chinese: 华赫艮; Mandarin Pinyin: Huà Hègěn; Jyutping: Waa4 Hak1-gan3) are the three highest ranked ministers in the Dali government. They are highly skilled in martial arts and also serve as the king's bodyguards.
  • The four bodyguards of Duan Zhengchun are dedicated to protecting the prince and his family. Duan regards them as his fellows rather than his subordinates. The four are:
    • Chu Wanli (traditional Chinese: 褚萬里; simplified Chinese: 褚万里; Mandarin Pinyin: Chǔ Wànlǐ; Jyutping: Cyu2 Maan6-lei5), disguised as a fisherman. He is killed by Duan Yanqing.
    • Gu Ducheng (traditional Chinese: 古篤誠; simplified Chinese: 古笃诚; Mandarin Pinyin: Gǔ Dúchéng; Jyutping: Gu2 Duk1-sing4), disguised as a woodcutter.
    • Fu Sigui (traditional Chinese: 傅思歸; simplified Chinese: 傅思归; Mandarin Pinyin: Fù Sīguī; Jyutping: Fu6 Si1-gwai1), disguised as a farmer.
    • Zhu Danchen (Chinese: 朱丹臣; Mandarin Pinyin: Zhū Dānchén; Jyutping: Zyu1 Daan1-san4), disguised as a scholar. Duan Yu regards him as a close friend because both of them have common interests in literature and poetry.
  • Benyin (Chinese: 本因; Mandarin Pinyin: Běnyīn; Jyutping: Bun2-jan1) is the abbot of Heavenly Dragon Monastery (天龍寺) in Dali.
  • Kurong (traditional Chinese: 枯榮; simplified Chinese: 枯荣; Mandarin Pinyin: Kūróng; Jyutping: Fu1-wing4) is the most powerful in martial arts among all of Heaven Dragon Monastery's monks. He lets Duan Yu read the "Six Meridians Divine Sword" manual and memorise it before destroying the book.
  • Zhong Wanchou (traditional Chinese: 鐘萬仇; simplified Chinese: 钟万仇; Mandarin Pinyin: Zhōng Wànchóu; Jyutping: Zung1 Maan6-sau4), nicknamed "Horse Deity" (traditional Chinese: 馬王神; simplified Chinese: 马王神; Mandarin Pinyin: Mǎ Wáng Shén; Jyutping: Maa5 Wong4 San4), is the master of Wanjie Valley (萬劫谷) and Gan Baobao's husband. He is extremely protective of his wife and hates Duan Zhengchun to the core because he insists that the latter seduced his wife. He even placed a sign at the valley's entrance that reads: Any person with the family name "Duan" who enters this valley will be killed without exception (姓段者入此谷杀无赦).
  • Reverend Huangmei (traditional Chinese: 黃眉大師; simplified Chinese: 黄眉大师; Mandarin Pinyin: Huángméi Dàshī; Jyutping: Wong4-mei4 Daai6-si1) is the abbot of Nianhua Monastery (拈花寺). He plays an important role in rescuing Duan Yu from Wanjie Valley as he distracts Duan Yanqing in a game of weiqi while Duan Zhengchun's men enter the room where Duan Yu is held via an underground tunnel.
