Main article: Battle of KarbalaThe Battle of Karbala took place in the year 680, between an Army from Syria further supported by a force from Kufa and the caravan of families and friends of Husayn ibn Ali, the grandson of the Prophet of Islam, Muhammad. This caravan consisted of less than 300 people of whom approximately 128 - 136 men and women were killed by the forces of the Yazid I.
