Second World War
The King's expansion during the Second World War was modest compared to 1914-18. Existing battalions formed duplicates as in WWI, while "National Defence Companies" were combined to create a new "Home Defence" battalion. In addition to this, 16 battalions and four batteries of the Home Guard were affiliated to the regiment.

Famous quotes containing the words world and/or war:
“Books, gentlemen, are a species of men, and introduced to them you circulate in the very best society that this world can furnish, without the intolerable infliction of dressing to go into it. In your shabbiest coat and cosiest slippers you may socially chat even with the fastidious Earl of Chesterfield, and lounging under a tree enjoy the divinest intimacy with my late lord of Verulam.”
—Herman Melville (18191891)
“This war no longer bears the characteristics of former inter-European conflicts. It is one of those elemental conflicts which usher in a new millennium and which shake the world once in a thousand years.”
—Adolf Hitler (18891945)
