Lagaan (translation: "land tax") is a 2001 Bollywood epic musical sports drama film, written and directed by Ashutosh Gowariker. The film was produced by and starred Aamir Khan. It was released in India on June 15, 2001. Lagaan grossed ₨ 57.8 Crore (US$12.37 million) worldwide, and was a box office success. The film also received a high critical acclaim and accumulated an approval rating of 95% on the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes.

Lagaan dominated Indian film award ceremonies, earning various nominations and winning numerous awards, including Best Film and Best Director, in each. The nominations ranged from recognition of the story to its direction, and playback singing and lyrics to the cast's acting performance. The film won a total of eight National Film Awards, seven Filmfare Awards, nine IIFA Awards, eight Zee Cine Awards, and eight Screen Awards.

Lagaan was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film at the 74th Academy Awards. It became the third Hindi-language film to be nominated in the category (after Mother India in 1958 and Salaam Bombay! in 1989). However, it lost the award to the Bosnian war film No Man's Land. The film won awards in film festivals, in the cities of Portland, Leeds, Bergen, and Locarno. In the 2002 American Choreography Awards, Lagaan won the award for Outstanding Achievement in Feature Film.

Channel 4 listed Lagaan at #14, in its list of "Top 50 Films to See Before you Die"; the only Indian film to be listed. In 2010, the film was ranked #55 in Empire magazines' list of "The 100 Best Films of World Cinema". In 2011, it was listed in Time magazines' list of "The All-TIME 25 Best Sports Movies".
