Levelling - Leveling Loops and Gravity Variations

Leveling Loops and Gravity Variations

If the Earth's gravity field were completely regular and gravity constant, leveling loops would always close precisely:

around a loop. In the real gravity field of the Earth, this happens only approximately; on small loops typical of engineering projects, the loop closure is negligible, but on larger loops covering regions or continents it is not.

Instead of height differences, geopotential differences do close around loops:

where stands for gravity at the leveling interval i. For precise leveling networks on a national scale, the latter formula should always be used.

should be used in all computations, producing geopotential values for the benchmarks of the network.

Famous quotes containing the words loops, gravity and/or variations:

An accurate charting of the American woman’s progress through history might look more like a corkscrew tilted slightly to one side, its loops inching closer to the line of freedom with the passage of time—but like a mathematical curve approaching infinity, never touching its goal. . . . Each time, the spiral turns her back just short of the finish line.
    Susan Faludi (20th century)

Grown beyond nature now, soft food for worms,
They lift frail heads in gravity and good faith.
    Derek Mahon (b. 1941)

I may be able to spot arrowheads on the desert but a refrigerator is a jungle in which I am easily lost. My wife, however, will unerringly point out that the cheese or the leftover roast is hiding right in front of my eyes. Hundreds of such experiences convince me that men and women often inhabit quite different visual worlds. These are differences which cannot be attributed to variations in visual acuity. Man and women simply have learned to use their eyes in very different ways.
    Edward T. Hall (b. 1914)
