Lawrence of Rome - Prayer

Prayer

This prayer can be found in the Roman Missal on the saint's feast day, August 10:

O God, giver of that ardor of love for you
by which Saint Lawrence was outstandingly faithful in service
and glorious in martyrdom,
grant that we may love what he loved
and put into practice what he taught.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever.
Amen.

Or more accurately:

O God,
Blessed Lawrence showed forth the fire of his love for you, both by faithful service and glorious martyrdom.
Make us to love the things which he loved,
and to do the works that he taught.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever. Amen.

In the Breviary of 1962 (now authorized again) the prayer reads:

O Almighty God,
Who didst give unto Blessed Lawrence power
to be more than conqueror in his fiery torment;
grant unto us, we beseech thee,
the power to quench the flames of our sinful lusts.
Through Jesus Christ, we pray
Amen

In the Calendar of Feast Days for the Episcopal Church, Holy Women, Holy Men (2010 ed.), the collect for the feast of "Laurence, Deacon and Martyr at Rome" on August 10 reads:

Almighty God, you called your deacon Laurence to serve you with deeds of love, and gave him the crown of
martyrdom: Grant that we, following his example, may fulfill your commandments by defending and supporting the
poor, and by loving you with all our hearts; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and
the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Famous quotes containing the word prayer:

I believe the alphabet is no longer considered an essential piece of equipment for traveling through life. In my day it was the keystone to knowledge. You learned the alphabet as you learned to count to ten, as you learned “Now I lay me” and the Lord’s Prayer and your father’s and mother’s name and address and telephone number, all in case you were lost.
    Eudora Welty (b. 1909)

O what to me the little room
    That was brimmed up with prayer and rest;
He bade me out into the gloom,
And my breast lies upon his breast.
    William Butler Yeats (1865–1939)

    And prayer is more
Than an order of words, the conscious occupation
Of the praying mind, or the sound of the voice praying.
    —T.S. (Thomas Stearns)
