Laure Manaudou - 2007 World Swimming Championships and New 200 M Freestyle World Record

2007 World Swimming Championships and New 200 M Freestyle World Record

Manaudou broke the 200 m freestyle world record at the 2007 World Swimming Championships in Melbourne in winning the final. She also won the 400 m freestyle event. She obtained silver medals in the 100 m backstroke and the 800 m freestyle, and a bronze for 4×200 m freestyle relay. In the 100 backstroke, she became the second woman in history to swim under a minute in the event. She was leading the race in the 800 m final going into the last lap, but the American Kate Ziegler finally overtook her in the last metres to win by a margin of 28 cm. She was thus prevented from becoming the first female swimmer to win the 200 m, 400 m and 800 m freestyle titles at the same World Championships.

Famous quotes containing the words world, swimming and/or record:

When I read of the vain discussions of the present day about the Virgin Birth and other old dogmas which belong to the past, I feel how great the need is still of a real interest in the religion which builds up character, teaches brotherly love, and opens up to the seeker such a world of usefulness and the beauty of holiness.
    Olympia Brown (1835–1900)

Whenever parents become overly invested in a particular skill or accomplishment, a child’s fear of failure multiplies. This is why some children refuse to get into the pool for a swimming lesson, or turn their back on Daddy’s favorite sport.
    Cathy Rindner Tempelsman (20th century)

Such is the role of poetry. It unveils, in the strict sense of the word. It lays bare, under a light which shakes off torpor, the surprising things which surround us and which our senses record mechanically.
    Jean Cocteau (1889–1963)
