Language College

Language Colleges were introduced in 1995 as part of the Specialist Schools Programme in the United Kingdom. The system enables secondary schools to specialise in certain fields, in this case, modern foreign languages. Schools that successfully applied to the Specialist Schools Trust and become Language Colleges received extra funding for language teaching from this joint private sector and government scheme. Language Colleges also acted as a local point of reference for other schools and businesses in the area, with an emphasis on promoting languages within the community. They were also encouraged to develop links with schools and other institutions in foreign countries. There were 216 in the country.

The specialist schools programme was abolished by the Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition government when it came to power in May 2010.

Famous quotes containing the words language and/or college:

It is still not enough for language to have clarity and content ... it must also have a goal and an imperative. Otherwise from language we descend to chatter, from chatter to babble and from babble to confusion.
    René Daumal (1908–1944)

I never went near the Wellesley College chapel in my four years there, but I am still amazed at the amount of Christian charity that school stuck us all with, a kind of glazed politeness in the face of boredom and stupidity. Tolerance, in the worst sense of the word.... How marvelous it would have been to go to a women’s college that encouraged impoliteness, that rewarded aggression, that encouraged argument.
    Nora Ephron (b. 1941)
