Lands of Sweden - Subdivision

Subdivision

  • Götaland (Gothenland, "Land of the Goths") is the southern, most densely populated part, consisting of ten provinces
  • Svealand (Swealand, "Land of the Swea") is the central part, named after the historic Sweden proper, which is the smallest of the three parts with six provinces
  • Norrland (literally "Northlands") is the northern part, which is the largest of the three parts, covering 60 percent of the total Swedish territory with nine provinces.

They are used in weather reports, and therefore their boundaries can be seen on television and on the weather maps in the press. But they have no administrative function and no coats of arms.

I have no doubt but that the misery of the lower classes will be found to abate whenever the Government assumes a freer aspect and the laws favor a subdivision of Property.
    James Madison (1751–1836)
