The Lake Pithlachocco Canoe Site (also known as Newman's Lake Canoe Site) is a historic site which is east of Gainesville, Florida. It is located on the northeast shore of Newnan's Lake, off State Road 26. On March 27, 2001, it was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.

It was here that the remains of numerous prehistoric canoes where discovered, many dating from the late Archaic period.

Famous quotes containing the words lake, canoe and/or site:

    Turn back,
    back
    to the lake of Delos;
    lest all the song notes
    pause and break
    across a blood-stained throat....
    Hilda Doolittle (1886–1961)

    It is said that some Western steamers can run on a heavy dew, whence we can imagine what a canoe may do.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

    It is not menstrual blood per se which disturbs the imagination—unstanchable as that red flood may be—but rather the albumen in the blood, the uterine shreds, placental jellyfish of the female sea. This is the chthonian matrix from which we rose. We have an evolutionary revulsion from slime, our site of biologic origins. Every month, it is woman’s fate to face the abyss of time and being, the abyss which is herself.
    Camille Paglia (b. 1947)
