Lake Braddock Debate/Speech
Home to the 2012 NCFL Lincoln-Douglas Debate champion, Lake Braddock's Debate and Speech team is one of the most storied teams in the school. The team's roots were formed in policy debate, and Lake Braddock is one of only four teams in the nation to achieve back-to-back championships at the University of Kentucky's Tournament of Champions Tournament in Policy Debate in 1984 and 1985. The team has placed numerous students at various national tournaments throughout its existence. In recent years, the team has won the overall VHSL AAA State Debate Title in 2011 and 2012, winning individual championships in Lincoln-Douglas Debate in 2011 and 2012, and Student Congress in 2012. Additionally, the Speech team placed 5th at the 2012 VHSL AAA State Championships, winning 2nd place finishes in both Impromptu and Extemporaneous speaking. On the national stage, in addition to the NCFL national championship, the team also had a member reach the Semi-Finals of the Extemporaneous Speaking Tournament of Champions at Northwestern University, the octafinal round of Domestic Extemp at NFL Nationals, and the Semi-Finals of Student Congress at NCFL, all during the 2011-2012 school year. The team actively competes in the Washington-Arlington Catholic Forensics League (NCFL),the Virginia High School League, the Virginia district of the National Forensic League, and at invitational tournaments throughout the nation.
The team offers competition in Lincoln-Douglas Debate, Policy Debate, Public Forum Debate, Congressional Debate, and all standard Individual Events.The team is open to any student at Lake Braddock Secondary School who is in good academic standing. Team practices begin in the late summer, with competitions being held thrugh mid-June.
