La Spirale Du Temps (comic) - Story

Story

One night, in a ruined temple near the plantation of her cousin Izumi in Borneo, Yoko witnesses a young girl arriving from the far future in a time machine. As one of the men who set up the time machine's beacon shoots the girl, Yoko interferes and uses her aikido to throw him on the ground. To her great surprise, the man then disintegrates.

Yoko tends to the girl, who tells her that her name is Monya and that she has been sent to this epoch to find and kill a certain Stephen Webbs. Webbs' research on antimatter led to the development of a weapon that destroyed the entire Earth in 3872. The time machine was an invention of her father; along with his daughter, his assistant and the man who shot Monya (a convicted murderer), he spent his days as one of the last surviving humans aboard a scientific space station. The assistant and the criminal had been sent back first in order to prevent Webb's discovery, while Monya was to follow them when she was 20 years old; however, the convict apparently caused the death of the assistant in order to use Webb's discovery for his own gain. Additionally, with her father's premature death by radiation poisoning, Monya couldn't remain until the appointed time and thus travelled back into the past immediately, where she encountered Yoko.

Yoko and Monya travel to Sulawesi and meet Webbs in his research center on top of Dragon Mountain. To her surprise, they find evidence that the Japanese had already experimented with antimatter and matter compaction in World War II, and that her great-uncle Toshiro Ishida, who was an army officer in Sulawesi during the Japanese occupation, seems to have been involved. Using the time machine, called translator, Yoko travels back to 1943 to find out more about the strange 'creature' hiding in Dragon Mountain, and after a rough start manages to convince her great-uncle of her sincerity. But as Yoko learns more, the creature becomes aggressive, killing several people both in the past and present, including Webbs. Before he dies, however, Webbs manages to effect an anti-matter reaction inside the creature, but the resulting chain reaction destroys the mountain lab.

After some investigation, Monya finds out that with the death of Webbs and the destruction of his research, they have created an alternative future to which she cannot return. So she decides to stay in Borneo as Izumi's adopted daughter.

Famous quotes containing the word story:

A story of particular facts is a mirror which obscures and distorts that which should be beautiful; poetry is a mirror which makes beautiful that which it distorts.
    Percy Bysshe Shelley (1792–1822)

I like to compare the holiday season with the way a child listens to a favorite story. The pleasure is in the familiar way the story begins, the anticipation of familiar turns it takes, the familiar moments of suspense, and the familiar climax and ending.
    Fred Rogers (20th century)

Even a nine story pagoda must be built up level by level.
