La Molina District - The District

The District

La Molina is a mid to upper class residential district, zones in which La Planicie, Rinconada, Las Lagunas, Camacho and Residential Monterrico stand out. Numerous Peruvian celebrities live in La Molina as well as many political figures. This is due to the relative safety and calm that the district provides. Several important exclusive Peruvian social clubs are in this district, like Rinconada Country Club, Country Club La Planicie and the Hebraica Club.

La Molina faces an accessibility problem because the Javier Prado and Raúl Ferrero avenues serve as the only roads that connect this district with the rest of the city, and thus become overloaded during the peak hours. Modern enterprise buildings, shopping malls, private universities are in La Molina. An intense urbanizing process has turned La Molina into an example of development and progress for the country.

There is an abundance of first class private schools in La Molina, including Newton College, Colegio Waldorf-Lima, Colegio Frankin D. Roosevelt, Peruvian North American Abraham Lincoln School, Villa María, La Recoleta, Alpamayo, Antonio Raimondi, Queen of Angels School (Reina de los Ángeles), Villa Caritas, San Pedro, Peruvian-German School Reina del Mundo, Domingo Faustino Sarmiento, Lord Byron, La Molina Christian Schools (LMCS).

Several universities are located in La Molina, including Universidad Nacional Agraria La Molina, Universidad San Ignacio de Loyola, Universidad Femenina del Sagrado Corazón (UNIFE) and Universidad de San Martín de Porres.

La Molina also has the middle class neighbourhoods of Santa Felicia, Santa Raquel, Covima, Santa Patricia, in the northwest. In recent years some of these neighbourhoods have had an increase in crime, mainly due to violence caused by fans attending games at the nearby Estadio Monumental. In the south it's La Ensenada, La Capilla, Portada del Sol, Las Praderas de la Molina, Las Lomas de la Molina Vieja, el Valle, Isla del Sol, Viña Alta etc. At La Molina Vieja there are exclusive homes that are located in the neighbourhoods of La Molina Vieja, La Alameda de la Molina Vieja, Los Sirius and El Remanso.

Also, Santa Raquel used to belong to the district of Ate. In 1989, La Molina won over some parts of Ate such as Santa Raquel, Patricia, Mayorazgo, Covima, etc. Due to this, this part of the district has integrated quite well to La Molina. For example, the per capita income is considerably better in this suburb than in any other in the district of Ate.
