Election of 2000
Although Kondratenko was highly popular in Krasnodar Krai he refused to participate in the new race for governor. His friends, colleagues and a lot of citizens of the Krai were trying to make him change his decision, but Kondratenko kept his intention to retire from governorship. On 3 December 2000 Alexander Tkachyov was elected the new governor. During the electoral race he was supported by Kondratenko and in the absence of serious rivals he (Tkachyov) won the election easily.
