Kingston High School (Washington) - Site History

Site History

Between 1954 and 1975 the property was the site of the Nike Missile Launch Site #92 which contained two missile magazines, support buildings, and barracks. The US military has not disclosed if nuclear weapons were ever located on the site. Due to public concerns about potential effects of suspected contaminants at the site, investigations and testing of the site were undertaken in 2003-2004 by the US Environmental Protection Agency and the Washington State Department of Health (DOH), in cooperation with the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR). The testing found that radiation is not present above natural background levels. The agencies concluded that exposure to the soil and drinking water posed no current or future health hazards and found no significant elevations in occurrences of cancer incidence in the area.

Famous quotes containing the words site and/or history:

The present hour is always wealthiest when it is poorer than the future ones, as that is the pleasantest site which affords the pleasantest prospects.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

One classic American landscape haunts all of American literature. It is a picture of Eden, perceived at the instant of history when corruption has just begun to set in. The serpent has shown his scaly head in the undergrowth. The apple gleams on the tree. The old drama of the Fall is ready to start all over again.
    Jonathan Raban (b. 1942)
