Apart from the Kharagpur municipality, the subdivision contains three census towns and rural areas of 99 gram panchayats under ten community development blocks: Dantan–I, Dantan–II, Pingla, Kharagpur–I, Kharagpur–II, Sabang, Mohanpur, Narayangarh, Keshiari and Debra. The three census towns are: Kharagpur Railway Settlement, Deuli and Balichak.
