Exile
It was General Zia who release Khair Bukhsh Marri and other political leaders on condition to leave the Pakistan. In 1981, Khair Bakhsh Marri accompanying thousands of Baloch went to Afghanistan. He was living Kabul but some time in camps of Baluch People's Liberation Front in Helmand and Kandhar. He admitted that Baloch rebellion had Afghan government support but there was no support of Soviet Union for Baloch guerrillas.
While in exile, there were several assassination attempt on his life in Afghanistan. The most attacks were carried out by the mujahideens but there are reliable sources that some attacks were well planned by his close friend, guerrilla commander and tribal elder Mir Hazar Khan Bejarani. On one incident, Mir Hazar Khan Bejarani and his son Haji with help of Pakistani agencies parked vehicle loaded with explosive outside the Helmand garrison, however failed to kill Khair Bakhsh Marri but instead, killing several dozens of Baloch civilians.
