Early Political Career
Cuccinelli was elected to the Senate in an August 2002 special election. He was re-elected in 2003 and 2007, with a recount needed in 2007, giving him a majority by 98 votes out of about 37,000 cast.
In the Senate, Cuccinelli sat on the Courts of Justice, Local Government, Rehabilitation and Social Services, and Transportation Committees. During his time in the Senate Cuccinelli took positions opposing abortion, gay marriage, illegal immigration, conservative positions on taxes, government spending, property rights, and the second amendment, while advocating law enforcement and increased care for the mentally disabled.
