The film mostly received a positive reception and its anti-war sentiments were recognized. The film has a 86% "Fresh" rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The film was voted at number 34 in Channel 4's 100 Greatest war films of all time. The film grossed $5.2 million in the United States when it was released in June 1970.
