Personal Life
In 1997, Carpenter and O'Donnell were introduced by O'Donnell's brother Daniel. On February 26, 2004, the couple were married in San Francisco, two weeks after mayor Gavin Newsom authorized the granting of marriage licenses to same-sex couples, which was later determined to be invalid under California law.
Carpenter and O'Donnell have three adopted children Parker Jaren (born May 25, 1995), Chelsea Belle (born September 20, 1997), and Blake Christopher (born December 5, 1999). Their fourth child, Vivienne Rose, was born to Carpenter through artificial insemination on November 29, 2002.
In November 2009, O'Donnell announced that she and Carpenter had separated in 2007.
Carpenter is now in a relationship with New York-based cabaret singer Anne Steele.
