Kagoshima is twinned with the following four cities overseas.
- Naples, Italy (since 3 May 1960)
- Perth, Australia (since 23 April 1974)
- Changsha, China (friendship relationship, since 30 October 1982)
- Miami, United States (since 1 November 1990)
It has also been twinned with Tsuruoka, Yamagata in Japan since 7 November 1969.
