Justin Guariglia


Justin Guariglia is a photographer and contributing editor to National Geographic Traveler Magazine, and a regular contributor to Smithsonian Magazine.

Guariglia, an Asia specialist, has been nominated for the International Center of Photography's "Young Photographer of the Year Award". He was named by Photo District News as one of the top "30 Young Photographers Under 30". Guariglia was also an Eddie Adams Workshop participant and award winner.

Guariglia won several Pictures of the Year awards, including two awards in POYi60 in the General Division/Science/Natural History Picture Story & Single Image categories for images of Plastination in China, and an additional award in POYi65 in the General News Reporting category for a photo of a cityscape image of the busiest container terminal in the world, the PSA International terminal in Singapore, which was photographed for Smithsonian Magazine.

In 2007 Guariglia produced a book with the Aperture Foundation, entitled Shaolin: Temple of Zen (Aperture 144 pages, ISBN 978-1-59711-080-8). He is considered the first photographer to have been allowed access inside the Shaolin Temple to photographically document classical Shaolin Kung Fu in the temple's 1500-year history.

In 2007, Guariglia appeared in a TV series with music legends Lou Reed and Tony Visconti discussing his Shaolin Temple project on Voom Network Gallery HD series entitled Aperture.

Guariglia's work is in the permanent collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Texas, and numerous other private collections.

His book Planet Shanghai: Architecture Family Food Fashion and Culture of China's Great Metropolis (Chronicle Books, 240 pages, ISBN 978-0-8118-6345-2), published in 2008, received reviews by the New Yorker and the New York Times: T magazines.

In 2011, he published with Wall Street Journal writer John Krich, "JOHOR: Asia Latitude One" (de.MO Publishing) a book about the southern most state in Malaysia called Johor. The book was named one of the best photo books of the year by American Photo Magazine, and Photo District News in New York.
