Doyle joined the Liberal Party of Australia in 1958, and became president of the South Yarra Branch. He was a Councillor for the City of Prahran from 1965 to 1967 and he was a Member of the Victorian Legislative Assembly for the seat of Gisborne from 1967 to 1971.

Upon the news of Doyle's death in 2007, Parliament stood in silence as a sign as a mark of respect.
