Works of Enduring Value
Corbett’s value for today’s military professional lies in four of his concepts:
- (1) controlling lines of communications, focus on the enemy, and manoeuvre for tactical advantage;
- (2) the aspects of political, economic and financial dimensions of waging war as well as with the technological and material aspects of war;
- (3) the primacy of politics in war and in devising an appropriate strategy to protect the national interests and
- (4) the emphasis on efficiency in battle while preserving costly assets.
However, his concept of limited war on isolated countries or nation states most likely would be very difficult to achieve with today’s political and economic intricacies between nations in conjunction with current technologies on a symmetric battlefield. However, they could still be applied on an asymmetric battlefield with success.

Famous quotes containing the words works of, works and/or enduring:
“For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and hast
crowned him with glory and honor.
Thou madest him to have dominion over the works of thy hands;”
—Bible: Hebrew Psalm VIII (l. VIII, 56)
“In all Works of This, and of the Dramatic Kind, STORY, or AMUSEMENT, should be considered as little more than the Vehicle to the more necessary INSTRUCTION.”
—Samuel Richardson (16891761)
“In contrast to the flux and muddle of life, art is clarity and enduring presence. In the stream of life, few things are perceived clearly because few things stay put. Every mood or emotion is mixed or diluted by contrary and extraneous elements. The clarity of artthe precise evocation of mood in the novel, or of summer twilight in a paintingis like waking to a bright landscape after a long fitful slumber, or the fragrance of chicken soup after a week of head cold.”
—Yi-Fu Tuan (b. 1930)
