Death
On 2 May 1993, Juanita Coco attended her boyfriend's birthday party in North Melbourne. At the end of the evening she got into a Subaru wagon driven by a female friend of another guest, accompanied by her boyfriend and his best friend Brad Lacy and two other friends.
As the vehicle travelled along Malvern Road, Malvern, it ran a red traffic light and was broadsided by another vehicle travelling at high speed. Sitting in the back seat, Juanita and Brad Lacy were killed instantly due to the force of the impact. The driver survived with no injuries and Juanita's boyfriend survived with serious injuries. Juanita was 17 when she died.
The subsequent investigation found that the driver of the Subaru was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident. Manslaughter charges were later dropped in court.

Famous quotes containing the word death:
“All societies on the verge of death are masculine. A society can survive with only one man; no society will survive a shortage of women.”
—Germaine Greer (b. 1939)
“Night is a dead monotonous period under a roof; but in the open world it passes lightly, with its stars and dews and perfumes, and the hours are marked by changes in the face of Nature. What seems a kind of temporal death to people choked between walls and curtains, is only a light and living slumber to the man who sleeps afield.”
—Robert Louis Stevenson (18501894)
“I was now at a university in New York, a professor of existential psychology with the not inconsiderable thesis that magic, dread, and the perception of death were the roots of motivation.”
—Norman Mailer (b. 1923)
