Joseph Canyon - Conservation

Conservation

In the late 1990s, the Nez Perce Tribe acquired 15,000 acres (61 km2) in the Joseph Creek watershed for conservation. The lands currently provide wildlife habitat for two federally listed threatened species, the bald eagle and the Snake River steelhead, and may provide habitat for the threatened lynx, Townsend's Big-eared Bat, and Mountain Quail. Several threatened plant species are also known to exist in the area, including Macfarlane’s four- o’clock and Spalding’s catchfly. Non-threatened species include bighorn sheep, elk, mule deer, blue grouse, golden eagles, and red-tailed hawks.

Famous quotes containing the word conservation:

A country grows in history not only because of the heroism of its troops on the field of battle, it grows also when it turns to justice and to right for the conservation of its interests.

The putting into force of laws which shall secure the conservation of our resources, as far as they may be within the jurisdiction of the Federal Government, including the more important work of saving and restoring our forests and the great improvement of waterways, are all proper government functions which must involve large expenditure if properly performed.
    William Howard Taft (1857–1930)
