John Mayer Discography

The discography of John Mayer, an American singer-songwriter and guitarist, consists of five studio albums, three live albums, two extended plays, twelve singles and two video albums. Even though it is not a solo album, it is worthy of mention that John Mayer collaborated with Pino Palladino and Steve Jordan on a Live album under the name of the John Mayer Trio. The album is called Try!.

A year after moving to Atlanta, Georgia and playing in local clubs, Mayer released the independent EP Inside Wants Out in 1999. This album, as well as continued performances, gained Mayer attention from the independent promotional record label Aware Records. Aware released his first full-length album, Room for Squares, in 2001, and when Columbia Records acquired Aware the following year, the album was repackaged and promoted as a major label release. The major label "debut" went on to sell over 4 million units in the United States alone, and more internationally. Mayer followed up by releasing a live album, Any Given Thursday, in both audio CD and DVD format, which featured many songs from Room for Squares, as well as covers and previously unreleased originals.

Mayer's second full-length studio album, Heavier Things, was released in 2003 and went on to sell over 2 million units in the United States. Again, Mayer released a live album of songs culled from the album's promotional tour with the title As/Is. After a brief recording hiatus, during which Mayer ventured to form the blues group John Mayer Trio, he returned to the studio and released his third full-length studio album Continuum in 2006. Three months after Continuum's release, Mayer released an EP of demos from Continuum's early sessions entitled The Village Sessions, named after the studio it was recorded in, the Village Recorder in Los Angeles. Mayer's fourth full-length studio album, Battle Studies, was released on November 17, 2009.

In addition to Mayer's solo work, he has worked extensively with other musicians and artists in genres ranging from R&B and hip-hop (with artists such as Common, Alicia Keys and Kanye West), country music (with the Dixie Chicks), blues (with Buddy Guy, Eric Clapton, B.B. King), and jazz (with Herbie Hancock, John Scofield, and Chris Botti). He was featured in "Beat It" by Fall Out Boy to play a guitar solo. He has sold over 10 million albums in the U.S. and 20 million albums worldwide.

Famous quotes containing the words john and/or mayer:

There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.
—Bible: New Testament 1 John 4:18.

I had a long day’s work, starting at eight in the morning and ending after nine at night, but in those days [we] ... did not think of our day in terms of hours. We liked our work, we were proud to do it well, and I am afraid that we were very, very happy.
    —Louie Mayer (b. c. 1914)
