The John Day River is a tributary of the Columbia River, approximately 6 miles (9.7 km) long, in northwestern Oregon in the United States. The river is one of two tributaries of the Columbia in Oregon to bear the name "John Day River". The other John Day River, east of the Cascade Range, is much longer and more well-known.
The river rises in the Northern Oregon Coast Range in Clatsop County at 46°08′20″N 123°42′17″W / 46.1388889°N 123.7047222°W / 46.1388889; -123.7047222 (John Day River source). It flows generally north and enters the Columbia from the south approximately 10 mi (16 km) east of Astoria. It passes under U.S. Route 30 near the small unincorporated community of John Day (not to be confused with the city of the same name in Grant County). The mouth of the river is approximately 15 mi (24 km) upstream from the mouth of the Columbia on the Pacific.

Famous quotes containing the words john, day and/or river:
“[17th-century] Puritans were the first modern parents. Like many of us, they looked on their treatment of children as a test of their own self-control. Their goal was not to simply to ensure the childs duty to the family, but to help him or her make personal, individual commitments. They were the first authors to state that children must obey God rather than parents, in case of a clear conflict.”
—C. John Sommerville (20th century)
“We aspire to be something more than stupid and timid chattels, pretending to read history and our Bibles, but desecrating every house and every day we breathe in.”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
“Cole Thornton: Just a minute, son.
Mississippi: I am not your son. My name is Alan Bourdillon Traherne.
Cole: Lord almighty.
Mississippi: Yeah, well, thats why most people call me Mississippi. I was born on the river in a flatboat.”
—Leigh Brackett (19151978)
