Early Life and Family

Johnson was born in Dublin, Georgia. His mother was a public school teacher within the Vidalia City Schools System and his father was a teacher at Brewton-Parker College, a small Baptist college located in Mount Vernon, Georgia.

Johnson moved to Buncombe County in western North Carolina when he was just six months old and has lived in North Carolina since. Joe attended public schools in Henderson County, graduating from East Henderson High School in Hendersonville. Joe holds two undergraduate degrees, one from North Carolina State University and the other from the University of London.

Johnson comes from a family of teachers, farmers and leaders in the religious and business communities who taught by example the importance of public service and placing the needs of others above his individual needs.

Famous quotes containing the words early, life and/or family:

At the earliest ending of winter,
In March, a scrawny cry from outside
Seemed like a sound in his mind.
He knew that he heard it,
A bird’s cry, at daylight or before,
    In the early March wind.
    Wallace Stevens (1879–1955)

What is the life of man! Is it not to shift from side to side?—from sorrow to sorrow?—to button up one cause of vexation!—and unbutton another!
    Laurence Sterne (1713–1768)

I swear ... to hold my teacher in this art equal to my own parents; to make him partner in my livelihood; when he is in need of money to share mine with him; to consider his family as my own brothers and to teach them this art, if they want to learn it, without fee or indenture.
    Hippocrates (c. 460–c. 370 B.C.)
