Background and Early Life
Jeremy Gardiner was born in Münster, Germany, the third son of Captain Arthur Gardiner and Elizabeth Gardiner, younger than his two brothers by a decade or so. After spending 3 years in Singapore, the family returned to Britain, where the young Gardiner attended Watford Central Primary School while his father worked for the Ministry of Defence in Whitehall, London. It was around this time that Gardiner started visiting his maternal grandmother Vera Travers, in her native Swanage, a town surrounded by the dramatic landscape that was to make a deep and long lasting impression on the future artist.
From 1968–75, Jeremy Gardiner attended Duke of York’s Royal Military School, Dover, Kent where Captain Peter Smith, an inspirational teacher from the Royal Army Educational Corps, encouraged the student to draw and develop the skills that would guarantee him a place to study fine art at Newcastle University.
In 1979 Gardiner graduated from Newcastle University and successfully completed an Artist in Industry Fellowship at Bridon Wire with Yorkshire Arts. In 1980 John Makepeace invited Gardiner to stage his first solo exhibition at Parnham House, Makepeace’s School for Craftsmen in Wood in Beaminster, Dorset.
