Alleged Involvement With CIA Extraordinary Rendition Flights

On October 23, 2006, the New Yorker reported that Jeppesen handled the logistical planning for the CIA's extraordinary rendition flights. The allegation is based on information from an ex-employee who quoted Bob Overby, managing director of the company as saying "We do all of the extraordinary rendition flights — you know, the torture flights. Let's face it, some of these flights end up that way. It certainly pays well." The article went on to suggest that this may make Jeppesen a potential defendant in a law suit by Khaled El-Masri. Jeppesen was named as a defendant in a lawsuit filed by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) on May 30, 2007, on behalf of several other individuals who were allegedly subject to extraordinary rendition. The suit was dismissed in February, 2008 on a motion from the United States government, on theory that proceeding with the case would reveal state secrets and endanger relations with other nations that had cooperated.

On May 16, 2011, the Supreme Court declined to review the decision of the Ninth Circuit to dismiss the case.

Famous quotes containing the words alleged, involvement, cia and/or flights:

The entire construct of the “medical model” of “mental illness”Mwhat is it but an analogy? Between physical medicine and psychiatry: the mind is said to be subject to disease in the same manner as the body. But whereas in physical medicine there are verifiable physiological proofs—in damaged or affected tissue, bacteria, inflammation, cellular irregularity—in mental illness alleged socially unacceptable behavior is taken as a symptom, even as proof, of pathology.
    Kate Millett (b. 1934)

The mother whose self-image is dependent on her children places on those children the responsibility for her own identity, and her involvement in the details of their lives can put great pressure on the children. A child suffers when everything he or she does is extremely important to a parent; this kind of over-involvement can turn even a small problem into a crisis.
    Grace Baruch (20th century)

And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.
    —Bible: New Testament John 8:32.

These words of Jesus are inscribed on the wall of the main lobby at the CIA headquarters, Langley, Virginia.

Now cracks a noble heart. Good night, sweet prince,
And flights of angels sing thee to thy rest!
    William Shakespeare (1564–1616)
