Jeffries Ford Covered Bridge

The Jeffries Covered Bridge was destroyed by arson on April 2, 2002. It was a Burr Arch Truss covered bridge structure that was built by Joseph A. Britton & Son in 1861. It was 204 feet (62 m) long, 16 feet (4.9 m) wide, and 13 feet (4.0 m) high. Parke County is debating whether to rebuild this bridge to preserve its historical significance.

Famous quotes containing the words ford, covered and/or bridge:

Can a free people restrain crime without sacrificing fundamental liberties and a heritage of compassion?... Let us show that we can temper together those opposite elements of liberty and restraint into one consistent whole. Let us set an example for the world of a law-abiding America glorying in its freedom as well as its respect for law.
    —Gerald R. Ford (b. 1913)

The true colour of life is the colour of the body, the colour of the covered red, the implicit and not explicit red of the living heart and the pulses. It is the modest colour of the unpublished blood.
    Alice Meynell (1847–1922)

What need the bridge much broader than the flood?
    William Shakespeare (1564–1616)
