Japanese Escort Ship Amakusa

Amakusa was an escort ship of the Imperial Japanese Navy during World War II. On August 9, 1945, while lying in harbor at Onagawa Bay, Miyagi Prefecture, Japan, the ship came under attack by a Corsair piloted by Lieutenant Robert Hampton Gray which resulted in its sinking.

In 2007, a memorial was dedicated to both the crew of the Amakusa and Lt. Gray overlooking the town of Onagawa in Sakiyama Scenic Park.

Famous quotes containing the words japanese, escort and/or ship:

    A pragmatic race, the Japanese appear to have decided long ago that the only reason for drinking alcohol is to become intoxicated and therefore drink only when they wish to be drunk.
    So I went out into the night and the neon and let the crowd pull me along, walking blind, willing myself to be just a segment of that mass organism, just one more drifting chip of consciousness under the geodesics.
    William Gibson (b. 1948)

    When you escort someone, escort him all the way to his destination; if you help someone, help him thoroughly.
    Chinese proverb.

    Every day brings a ship,
    Every ship brings a word;
    Well for those who have no fear,
    Looking seaward well assured
    That the word the vessel brings
    Is the word they wish to hear.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)
