The Japan Coast Guard Academy (海上保安大学校, Kaijō Ho'an Daigakkō?) is a university-level academy established within the Japan Coast Guard for the purpose of training students to become officers. It is located in Kure, Hiroshima prefecture.
Students have the status of public employees. They do not pay tuition; moreover, they receive a salary (in 2003, the amount was 138 000 yen per month).
Technically it cannot award degrees of its own to its graduates because it is not in jurisdiction of Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT). A MEXT affiliate, the National Institution for Academic Degrees and University Evaluation does instead.
Famous quotes containing the words japan, coast, guard and/or academy:
“I do not know that the United States can save civilization but at least by our example we can make people think and give them the opportunity of saving themselves. The trouble is that the people of Germany, Italy and Japan are not given the privilege of thinking.”
—Franklin D. Roosevelt (18821945)
“Frequently also some fair-weather finery ripped off a vessel by a storm near the coast was nailed up against an outhouse. I saw fastened to a shed near the lighthouse a long new sign with the words ANGLO SAXON on it in large gilt letters, as if it were a useless part which the ship could afford to lose, or which the sailors had discharged at the same time with the pilot. But it interested somewhat as if it had been a part of the Argo, clipped off in passing through the Symplegades.”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
“There is only one element that can break the Afrikaner, and that is the Afrikaner himself. It is when the Afrikaner, like a baboon shot in the stomach, pulls out his own intestines. We must guard against that.”
—P.W. (Pieter Willem)
“When the State wishes to endow an academy or university, it grants it a tract of forest land: one saw represents an academy, a gang, a university.”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
