Legal Issues
During the time of the Jane Collective, abortion was illegal in Illinois as well as most of the United States. Although patients could be prosecuted, primary focus was placed on prosecuting those that were performing the abortions and not those who were receiving them. Throughout the four years that Jane operated the group was raided once by the police. No patients were arrested, but seven of the women working for Jane were arrested and their documents seized. However, the passing of Roe v. Wade soon after kept the women from being convicted of any crime. After its passing their case was dismissed.

Famous quotes containing the words legal and/or issues:
“We should stop looking to law to provide the final answer.... Law cannot save us from ourselves.... We have to go out and try to accomplish our goals and resolve disagreements by doing what we think is right. That energy and resourcefulness, not millions of legal cubicles, is what was great about America. Let judgment and personal conviction be important again.”
—Philip K. Howard, U.S. lawyer. The Death of Common Sense: How Law Is Suffocating America, pp. 186-87, Random House (1994)
“How to attain sufficient clarity of thought to meet the terrifying issues now facing us, before it is too late, is ... important. Of one thing I feel reasonably sure: we cant stop to discuss whether the table has or hasnt legs when the house is burning down over our heads. Nor do the classics per se seem to furnish the kind of education which fits people to cope with a fast-changing civilization.”
—Mary Barnett Gilson (1877?)
