Jacob Wrestling With The Angel

Jacob wrestling with the Angel is a biblical story commonly depicted in art. The story appears in chapter 32 of Genesis, and chapter 12 of the Book of Hosea. In Genesis 35:1-7 there is again a reference to the story. In the text as we have it, the being with which Jacob wrestles is variously described as an angel, a man, or God. Some would see here different source texts, while other readings are sensitive to the fluid language of myth. In any case, the being says his name is the same as where the fight takes place, which Jacob names Peniel or Penuel or Phanuel. The event occurs during Jacob's journey back to Canaan.

Famous quotes containing the words jacob, wrestling and/or angel:

I was not unemployed in my profession by the late John Jacob Astor; a name which, I admit, I love to repeat, for it hath a rounded and orbicular sound to it, and rings like unto bullion.
    Herman Melville (1819–1891)

We laugh at him who steps out of his room at the very moment when the sun steps out, and says: “I will the sun to rise”; and at him who cannot stop the wheel, and says: “I will it to roll”; and at him who is taken down in a wrestling match, and says: “I lie here, but I will that I lie here!” And yet, all laughter aside, do we ever do anything other than one of these three things when we use the expression, “I will”?
    Friedrich Nietzsche (1844–1900)

That ain’t snow, Mike. That’s angel hair. We done died and gone to heaven.
    Charles Beaumont (1930–1967)
