It's Not About The Bike: My Journey Back To Life - Mild Strabismus

Mild Strabismus

In the book Armstrong reveals that he has a mild form of strabismus which one sometimes can see from that his eyes are pointing in slightly different directions. Strabismus is caused from misaligned or tight eye muscles, but Armstrong has such a mild form of strabismus that the eyes normally will point approximately in the same direction and the condition is thus quite hard to spot. Only when a person with such a condition is very tired the eyes will start to drift in differnt directions, and Armstrong himself confirms his condition on page 199 in the book where he writes:

"Finally, I crossed the line. I checked the clock: 1:08:36.1 was the winner. I had beaten Zulle by 58 seconds. I fell off the bike, so tired I was cross-eyed. As tired as I have ever been. But I led the Tour de France again."

Betray, kind husband, Thy spouse to our sights,
