Irish Free State at The Commonwealth Games

In the first British Empire Games in 1930, the forerunner of the Commonwealth Games, held in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, a team representing all of Ireland competed. Bill Britton (IRL) was awarded a silver medal in the Hammer Throw, the only medal to the team.

In the second British Empire Games in 1934, held at London, England, two teams representing Northern Ireland and the Irish Free State took part. The 1934 games is the only games at which a team from the Irish Free State took part, although the team did not win any medals.

The next games were held in 1938, but by this time, the Irish Free State no longer existed. By 1950, the Republic of Ireland had been created, and had left the Commonwealth, and so has not sent a team to any subsequent Games.

Northern Ireland has participated in the games from 1934, see Northern Ireland at the Commonwealth Games.

    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

Once the state has been founded, there can no longer be any heroes. They come on the scene only in uncivilized conditions.
