Rape and Sexual Abuse By Senior Officers

Derry O'Rourke, Olympic coach in 1980 and 1992 was convicted on 27 sexual abuse charges against minors and sentenced to 12 years imprisonment in 1998. He received a further sentence of 10 years in 2005 for repeated rape and indecent assault of a female swimmer between the ages of 14 and 18.

George Gibney, Irish national coach from 1984-1991 was charged with 27 counts of sexual abuse. A judicial review in 1994 prevented the case from proceeding due to the length of time elapsed since the alleged incidents took place. He has since left the country to live in the United States.

A group of Gibney's former swimmers have lodged sworn affidavits with senior counsel and cannot understand why the man is not extradited from the United States. During the period of his investigation Gibney worked in Scotland. Those interested should know that he worked in Marian College Pool, Guninesses Pool and Waterford Crystal social club.

Famous quotes containing the words abuse, senior and/or officers:

When a family is free of abuse and oppression, it can be the place where we share our deepest secrets and stand the most exposed, a place where we learn to feel distinct without being “better,” and sacrifice for others without losing ourselves.
    Letty Cottin Pogrebin (20th century)

Never burn bridges. Today’s junior prick, tomorrow’s senior partner.
Kevin Wade, U.S. screenwriter, and Mike Nichols. Katharine Parker (Sigourney Weaver)

You know, what I very well know, that I bought you. And I know, what perhaps you think I don’t know, you are now selling yourselves to somebody else; and I know, what you do not know, that I am buying another borough. May God’s curse light upon you all: may your houses be as open and common to all Excise Officers as your wifes and daughters were to me, when I stood for your scoundrel corporation.
    Anthony Henley (d. 1745)
