Inwood (LIRR Station) - History

History

In the 19th Century, Inwood was originally part of Far Rockaway, and the Long Island Rail Road had a station along the Cedarhurst Cut-off called Far Rockaway-Grove Street, which was named for Lockwood's Grove. The station was built in 1872 but was then discontinued and moved to Syosset in September 1877. At some point, it was replaced with a station named "Westville" and was changed to "Inwood" in 1889. Between December 3, 1911 and 1956, the station had sheltered-sheds.

Inwood Station currently exists as little more than two high-level sheltered side platforms, both of which run beneath the underpass for the Nassau Expressway. It is the penultimate station on the Far Rockaway Branch, and the last one in Nassau County before the line re-enters New York City.
