Site Selection
Sites are selected and graded based on seven criteria, or "values". These are:
- Work of art
- Historical
- Horticultural
- Architectural
- Scenic
- Nature conservation
- Archaeological (added in 1993)
Each site is assessed, on a scale of none—little—some—high—outstanding, for each value. There is no overall grading system. Decisions on inclusion are made by a steering group which includes representatives of the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh, the National Trust for Scotland and the Garden History Society in Scotland.

Famous quotes containing the words site and/or selection:
“That is a pathetic inquiry among travelers and geographers after the site of ancient Troy. It is not near where they think it is. When a thing is decayed and gone, how indistinct must be the place it occupied!”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
“The books for young people say a great deal about the selection of Friends; it is because they really have nothing to say about Friends. They mean associates and confidants merely.”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
