Institute For Cosmic Ray Research - Current Projects

Current Projects

  • Super-Kamiokande - Detection of neutrinos and search for proton decays in a large water tank
  • CANGAROO - Very high energy cosmic gamma ray observation by telescope. Located on the Woomera Prohibited Area in South Australia.
  • Tibet - Search for point sources of VHE cosmic gamma at Tibet heights
  • Telescope Array - Aiming at highest energy cosmic ray physics by detecting weak light from atmosphere
  • Gravitational Wave Group - R & D for detection of unknown phenomena 'gravitational waves'
  • SDSS - Making 3-D map of very distant galaxies with specific wide view telescopes as an international collaboration with Princeton University
  • Theory Group - Theoretical studies for verifying Grand Unified Theory and early Universe
  • Ashra (All-sky Survey High Resolution Air-shower detector) - The group has developed a new type of detector with wide angle high resolution aiming for monitoring optical and particle radiation from high-energy transient objects. The detector system was installed on the slopes of the Mauna Loa volcano at about 10,500 feet elevation in 2006 and 2007. Mauna Loa is located in the Big Island of Hawaii in the state of Hawaii. The detector system is currently operational.

Famous quotes containing the words current and/or projects:

You will belong to that minority which, according to current Washington doctrine, must be protected in its affluence lest its energy and initiative be impaired. Your position will be in contrast to that of the poor, to whom money, especially if it is from public sources, is held to be deeply damaging.
    John Kenneth Galbraith (b. 1908)

But look what we have built ... low-income projects that become worse centers of delinquency, vandalism and general social hopelessness than the slums they were supposed to replace.... Cultural centers that are unable to support a good bookstore. Civic centers that are avoided by everyone but bums.... Promenades that go from no place to nowhere and have no promenaders. Expressways that eviscerate great cities. This is not the rebuilding of cities. This is the sacking of cities.
    Jane Jacobs (b. 1916)
