Early Classification
Aside from pacay another common name for this species is "guama." Well known for its sweet taste, the pods have been around for a long time. They have been depicted in ancient ceramics. The Incas had pacay pods carried to their mountain capital of Cuzco. Pedro Pizarro reported that the Inca emperor Atahualpa sent to Francisco Pizarro a basketful of guamas as a gift.

Famous quotes containing the word early:
“Long before I wrote stories, I listened for stories. Listening for them is something more acute than listening to them. I suppose its an early form of participation in what goes on. Listening children know stories are there. When their elders sit and begin, children are just waiting and hoping for one to come out, like a mouse from its hole.”
